A BOOK OF PRACTICAL MONSTERS by Craig Brownlie

This is the cover I did for Craig Brownlie's excellent collection of short stories, A BOOK OF PRACTICAL MONSTERS.

If you're a fan of the classic Universal monsters (like myself) you'll definitely love these stories. Each one is as fun as the next, all the while hitting a wide range of notes from hilarious and serious to exciting and touching.

Be sure to pick up a pre-release copy from the fine and scholarly Mr. Brownlie at Scares For Cares AuthorCon on October 4-6. You won't regret it.

An Oysterman at Rest, 8 x 11.5 in., graphite & ink on paper (photo reference credited to Robert de Gast)
This is my latest drawing for the Forged by Water series and is titled "An Oystermen at Rest". It's inspired by the photography of the late Robert de Gast, one of the preeminent photographers of the Chesapeake Bay and the watermen working its waters.

The particular image I referenced is from an exhibition of his work put together by the CHESAPEAKE BAY MARITIME MUSEUM called "Robert de Gast’s Chesapeake". More information about this exhibition can be found at www.robertdegastschesapeake.org.

"Retired Waterman; A Trip to Tangier Oil Company (drawing one)"

Retired Waterman; A Trip to Tangier Oil Company (drawing one), 7 x 11.5 in., ink & graphite on paper (photo reference credited to Jay Fleming)
Fresh off the drawing table (completed this morning in fact) we have the final drawing from my triptych of retired Tangier Island watermen.

Like many of the drawings I've been doing recently these are inspired by the photography of Jay Fleming. However, unlike others these three drawings originated in a single photograph comprising all three men sitting side-by-side. To create the triptych I took each gentlemen and created a single drawing of each. Next up I'll post all three drawings together left-to-right.

This drawing is not yet available in galleries, so if you're interested in owning this particular piece please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected].

The drawing seen here "Dredging for Crab" is from my ongoing series, Forged by Water and is inspired by the beautiful photography of Robert de Gast - a quintessential photographer of the Chesapeake Bay, Delmarva Peninsula, and the regions watermen. Special thanks to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and Gabriella Cantelmo for allowing me access to their impressive archive of Mr. de Gast's work.

The show is a short one so be sure to take advantage while you can. It runs from just May 15-19 with a reception tomorrow Friday, May 17th from 5-8pm. Thanks and I hope to see you there!

New Artwork at Bishop's Stock Gallery

5/1/2024

I'm excited to announce that I currently have new artwork available at BISHOP'S STOCK GALLERY. These pieces are from a collection of new drawings titled Forged by Water, an ongoing series attempting to capture the rugged and gritty nature of life as a Chesapeake Bay waterman. The title of the artwork here is "Mud Rock Oysters" and depicts waterman PT Hambleton of Deal Island, MD in action.

Most of the drawings currently in the series originated in the photography of Jay Fleming, one of Maryland's most skilled photographers (please check out his work here ). My hope is that I've done justice to Jay's excellent work as well as to the lives of the watermen and those who work within that industry.

Latest Illustration for SPACE & TIME MAGAZINE

4/22/2024

Picture
Hi all,

This is the latest illustration for Space & Time Magazine (#146). It's based on the short story by Craig Brownlie titled FusionFriends and the Purple Cow.

If I'm remembering correctly, and I think I am, this is the first cow I've ever drawn - let alone the first purple one. Milestones come in many shapes and sizes... and colors.

If you'd like to get yourself a copy of the magazine that can be done at spaceandtime.net.

Thanks, hope you enjoy!
