First off, a happy Friday to you all. It's actually raining where I'm at right now but it's kind of nice. I enjoy working in doors when it's raining outside. Something about the sound of the rain on the windows can really help your thoughts move easily. Anyways, here we have it. The final drawing of our good pal Nantan. You may notice I focused just a bit more on light and shadow, this way the forms and shapes would come across as clearly as possible. With a composition as symmetrical and straight on as this one it's important bring out those forms, as there aren't any other devices to help create depth and dimension. More noticeably you'll see I've added more detail to his environment to try and capture some of the qualities I mentioned in the previous post regarding character - something that would aid in reflecting his personality. A few leafs here, some grass there, a slight breeze and this is what we have. Hope you guys dig it and I'll talk with you soon. Have a great weekend! - D

 Hey everybody, And here we have the 3rd installment of our sketch of Chief Nantan... I've moved onto to describing the details and design of the clothing, as well as refining his left hand - which I wanted to be doing something other than just chilling on his knee. Native Americans have a fine reputation for being in tune with nature and sensitive to their surroundings, far more than we are today. So as you can see I decided to have him sifting through his hand the earth beneath him. Something slightly more emblematic of his character. Hope you enjoy it and I'll talk with you tomorrow, as we'll have the 4th and final installment of our good pal Nantan. - D  What's up everybody, As promised I wanted to post up part 2 of my sketch of Chief Nantan. At this stage you can see I've began describing the clothing, buffalo headdress, hands (well, the right hand anyway) and the overall body position. Once the foundation of these areas are laid out I can then begin to add details to the clothing - such as where the wrinkles form, as well as it's design and texture. This is a thumbnail from a sketch of Chief Nantan, one of the elder Native American characters from ADRIFT. Now, this is supposed to be a fairly simplistic sketch, as it's something to be used as the building block for something larger. Though as I was working I couldn't help but get caught up in the amazing texture of the Native American face. There's an incredible strength in their features that stands out - like they're molded from earth or carved from stone. It's almost surreal. So I thought, since I've had such a great time with it, it'd be cool to post a little of this sketch each day for the next few days. This is from Last Caress, a story I'm working on with the fine writer Mr. Sam Costello. This shot is directly after Sybil, our extremely superficial protagonist exits the room but not before expelling her displeasure at the current work produced by her modeling agency. Take a quick peek inside... the Collector's Vault. Hope you enjoy, - D  How's it going everybody, I was talking with writer and pal, Gary Raisor recently and he mentioned he was going to the second largest convention in the country this year, which is of course Dragon Con in Atlanta. Gary was promoting quite a many project there: books, comics and even a short film of a short story of his. One of the many entree's on Gary's dinner plate is a story called Less Than Human. He's currently in the midst of putting together a film script and graphic novel adaptation of LTH and wanted to know if I was curious about contributing a concept sketch of main character Steven Adler. I've read both Gary's original novel of LTH as well as his film script of it and one of the many things that stands out are his characters. Deeply crafted, real and very often funny as hell. Steven in particular. In a sinister manner of course, being that he's the "bad guy". So of course I worked up a drawing as fast as my hands would allow and the results rests right here. Now, I've done sketches of Mr. Adler in the past but this time I wanted to really visually express his personality, while also touching on those mysterious aspects of his character. A funny guy? Yeah. A nice guy? Well, no. Working on this drawing was, as is the case with all of Gary's characters, extremely engaging and I had a good time with it. (Word has it Gary even had the chance to show it to Lance Henriksen while at the show. And, well, that's just plain cool). Anyways, hope you guys dig it and I'll talk with you soon. - D  What's up everybody, A little while ago I posted a single panel from a comic strip I've been working on, called Cody & Eugene. This actually is one of the few comics where I can say this is in fact my brainchild. Entirely. Meaning I'm the writer, illustrator, colorist, letterer and creator. The whole schmeel. It's been quite the experience. Many lessons learned and much enjoyment had. Now I can't show the whole strip for this panel (under contract and whatnot) but I thought I'd post the colored version for you guys to check out. Hope you dig it and I'll talk with ya soon! - D |
